Troye Sivan “Something To Give Each Other” Album Review
by Madison Avery
Australian popstar Troye Sivan is back with his highly anticipated third album Something To Give Each Other. Sivan got his start on Youtube in 2012 then was later signed to a record label in 2013 and released his EP TRXYE in 2014. The EP did numbers on the charts and Sivan continued to rise to fame over the years with more music releases, modeling, acting, his own luxury brand, and being a role model for people in the LGBTQ+ community. Something To Give Each Other walks the listeners through ten synthy pop packed tracks with ten different stories.
‘Rush’ was the first single to come out and was accompanied by the announcement of the album as well. A funky modern club tune is the perfect way to describe the song, it’s like a night full of euphoria and carefreeness. Rush is one of those songs that just makes you want to dance and let loose.
“Now, the only thing I wanna know is what’s the time where you are / What’s the night like where you are?” Sivan said the inspiration for the song came from a text he received from a guy he was talking to that said “What’s the time where you are?”, which became the title for the track. “Maybe I over romanticized it, but it was so sweet. Because he could definitely Google it.” Sivan told Apple Music.
“This thing kept happening where I was being approached by guys who’d previously or historically identified as straight. They were flirting with me, saying there was something in me that they were interest in. I just felt all these different things.”, Sivan explained what ‘One of Your Girls’ was about in an interview with Apple Music. “Give me a call if you ever get lonely / I’ll be like one of your girls or your homies / Say what you want, I’ll keep it a secret”, Sivan implies that he will pretend to be “one of the homies’ so that no one knows about what’s going on. Starring in the music video alongside Troye Sivan is actor and musician Ross Lynch, the video went viral on TikTok right after it was released.
Sivan slows it down for ‘Still Got It’, he explores running into an ex and realizing they are still the same and still wanting them. “Cut my hair into a bowl after you told me that you liked it like that / Wish I didn't care at all but now I'm in the mirror with scissors in hand”, he opens up about wanting to change his appearance to hopefully appease his ex.
‘Got Me Started’ was the first song Sivan had written for the album. “You just got me started / And I don’t think I can stop it / And I don’t wanna go home alone, alright?”, a synthy anthem about being so connected to someone you just met you don’t want to physically let go.
Sivan took to his Instagram on release day to say a bit about the album. “The world can be a scary, dark, sad place. I really hope this music brings you even the tiniest bit of joy this week, and into the future. Thank you for listening, watching, loving, responding. There’s so many people in the world, so many experiences, so much pleasure in you, and all around us, Let yourself enjoy.”
