Madison Beer “Silence Between Songs” Album Review
by Madison Avery
From posting covers online and being noticed by Justin Bieber to having certified gold singles, former Youtube star Madison Beer is back with her sophomore album. Silence Between Songs is an emotional reflection of envy and feeling like yourself again. Beer experimented with a new sound, stepping back from R&B she seems to have taken notes from Billie Eilish and Lana del Ray. The album was produced by Madison Beer with the help of Leroy Clampitt and One Love.
Opening track ‘Spinnin’, walks the listener through the cycle of being stuck and the world seemingly shutting down around you, things not feeling the same. “Did the sun stop rising? Cause the sky’s so gray / Did the world stop spinning today”.
Love so deep your world revolves around them and the attention they give you, Beer deep dives the feeling in the second track ‘Sweet Relief”. Backed with gorgeous harmonies and a funky bass, she really embraces the new sound.
‘Envy the Leaves’ is what Beer wishes she could do, be oblivious to what's to come and not feel anything. “I envy the leaves that grow from the trees / They’re all so carefree through the seasons, unaware of the fall”.
Beer sings of wishing the world would slow down and be able to enjoy life in ‘17’. “All my life I’ve never had the chance to stop and smell the flowers”, life is just moving too fast ever since she gained fame.
‘I Wonder’ opens up about finally getting over someone, feeling like yourself again, and being independent.
Beer gets emotional on ‘At Your Worst’, revealing the complications of a toxic relationship backed by an acoustic guitar and piano.
‘Dangerous’ discusses a topic most girls have gone through. Second guessing your worth is something no one wants to feel, Beer sings of a breakup and questions if it was her fault. “Right when I think I hate you / Something pulls me under like the tide / Even picked a house and chose our kids’ names / You’d always be mine’, they had planned their future together but everything came crashing down.
‘Reckless’ was the first single released for the album two years ago. Beer said the song was about “how easy it is for some people in relationships to hurt others and move on without any guilt’. She also said it is one of her favorite songs she has ever released.
Title track ‘Silence Between Songs’ delivers a different sound than what she usually does. In the track she dives into losing someone.
‘Silence Between Songs’ contrasts from Madison Beer’s past projects and presents maturity. The topics in the album are relatable and the songs are so beautifully written.
